Re: AmiCygnix on X1000

@jabirulo
If "Quick-Transfer: use" is what you mean by "enable/aktiv," that's the way it's set already. Ditto Videodriver:. Everything in the Apps: drawer version is set as in the partition version.

So next I try cygnusEd's suggestion.

Re: AmiCygnix on X1000

@all

I took the advice above and reinstalled AmiCygnix in my Apps: partition, now 4% full.

I use AmiCygnix primarily to run Sylpheed to keep up with some News Groups I have been active in for the last 15 years, although nowadays they are virtually moribund. I use an icon, Start_sylpheed.bat, that I leave out on my desktop. Although the icon since I installed anew is not as pleasing as the old one, being a screwdriver on top of a piece of fanfold paper with "SCR..." at the top instead of a Boing ball behind "AmiCygnix10", it worked beautifully, launching AmiCygnix almost instantly, with Sylpheed a split second behind, and shortly a count of new posts in the left side list.

So I was disconcerted to discover a few days ago that I had not changed my User-Startup file; it still had a line, "assign Cygnix: AmiCygnix:"! And it did the assignment without argument because at some point, early enough, I had moved my SAM640 hard drive into my X1000, and the assign command was finding AmiCygnix: on that drive.

I corrected that error immediately, once I discovered it: "assign Cygnix: Apps:AmiCygnix."

But, sadly, AmiCygnix now comes up slowly -- the screen itself fairly quickly, but I have to sit and wait while the bottom panel fills in and some app icons appear in the screen, and then Sylpheed opens in front of them. And then I have to click "Get" before the groups I am interested in get populated.

And if I wanted to use something other than Sylpheed, there's no AbiWord, no gnumeric, ...

I'm thinking I should go back to using the old AmiCygnix: partition, but what I should really do is probably obvious to everyone but me, so once again I seek advice.

Report on new install:

No improvement; it won't remember usernames or passwords. Back to the one I might have replaced.

One big puzzle: As would be expected, the new one had no bookmarks until I added this site's, and Windows > passwords is empty, as was Windows > cookies until I visited a couple of sites, but it knew what I had chosen for my home page! Where in the world is that info stored, if not in muiowb/?

Generally, Timberwolf works better and I'd use it all the time, if only it weren't so hard to launch sometimes.

@Raziel

Reinstall sounds worth a try, but I certainly won't delete the current one.

My current mui-owb does fill in many user name and password slots. Only two relatively minor problems: it won't do it for Amigans.net anymore (AmigaWorld and a number of other sites work fine; Hyperion fills in user name, but not password, and several sites work like this), and it won't remember new cases of either.

If the second problem remains with a new install, I'm much better of with what I have now.

Will report.

Re: password problem

@JosDuchIt

It's all very mysterious.

I removed Amigans.net related lines from Windows > Passwords... Now when I call up Amigans.net, the user name and password requesters are empty. But the user name and wrong password are still in muiowb/Conf/passwords.db, a very strange-looking file indeed.

Since messing with Passwords... when I type in my username and new password, the screen refreshes with "Thank you for logging in, kilaueabart." But down below Who's Online it says "Members: 0," and I can't reply to posts. It takes a second log-in to change those matters.

I have a fairly clear but old memory of being asked "Do you want me to save this password" sometimes when entering my password at some sites. Maybe back on the SAM460, which was also distinguished in that bookmarks worked in Timberwolf?

And yet another big mystery? Why the #%$*^@ did I never see that when I was looking for a password manager in the menus?

Time to give up?

@ChrisH
Thanks for that. I spent a lot of time fruitlessly searching for something called "password manager," but I guess you just meant go to muiowb/Conf/ and delete passwords.db.

I was hoping I would be able to just replace the bad password there with the right one -- they happened to be the same length -- so I wouldn't have to go back to looking up all my passwords, but no dice. Passwords.db is one weird-looking file!

(A few minutes later, after deleting the file) I was better off with the old password file. After signing on here and at AmigaWorld, I have a new password.db, but it's 0 bytes long, and I'd have to always enter all my usernames and passwords by hand. Fortunately, I didn't really delete the old one, and I have finally memorized my password for this site; much easier to just have to type the one in.

But I'm a bit surprised that I get a new but empty passwords.db.

I'll be darned, I got on with one click in Timberwolf!

I also find that I need to use Timberwolf for a few sites that won't let me on at all with mui-owb. But since switching to the X1000, I find I have to warm reboot two or three times before it will come up all the way, and I sure miss bookmarks!

@Thematic & Chris

Mostly I use mui-owb, and I don't think I tried amigans.net through Timberwolf since switching to X1000. (URL Preferences lists Netsurf, but I don't find it anywhere on this machine, aside from the AmiCygnix version!)

Now I'm curious. I'll try Timberwolf.

When I go to Amigans.net, the login page comes up, with my user name and the password requester filled in. But if I click the login button, I get a message that the name or password was wrong. So this time I fill them in by hand, click "remember me," and successfully log on.

The next time I want to log on, it's the same thing all over again. Why is the password requester filled in with a wrong password?

OK, it's starting to look like I've been wasting my time on a pipe dream.

PageStream 5.0.5.8 Pro works nicely on my SAM460ex, but I haven't been able to get it to work at all on my X1000. I was hoping I would be able to get at the SAM version from the X1000 so I wouldn't have to keep switching computers...

Would you be able to do it again? Maybe that's what I should be looking into.

OK, that gives me Local host, Default gateway, and Domain name servers, each some of that "192.168...." stuff one always sees. I guess I'll try them one at a time.

Meanwhile, I use Statcounter for web hits on my web page. The cookie I set up to block counting my visits doesn't always work, and I have to set up blockage of what Statcounter claims is my IP address, usually something like 72.235.... How does that fit in?

If you can run X1000 from a PC, it sure seems like one should be able to run a SAM640 from an X1000!

Actually, that's what I was trying to do with that "198.[etc]," where "[etc]" was the rest of the address I thought might be my SAM.

But to tell the truth, I think that might be my router's address, and thus in a sense the IP address of both computers. How do I find out for sure my SAM's IP address?

I'm trying to set up VVA (that's "vee vee ay," not "WA") on my X1000 to communicate with AmiVNC4 on my SAM460ex, but no luck so far. Clicking on the VVA icon gets me a vva Error alert, "Could not connect to VNC-server." Could it be that I need to change something in the VVA settings? Below is what I have now, with HOST set to my wired router's address but I'm not at all sure that's what it should be. It came with "HOST=pc" but trying silly things like "Amiga" or "OS4" bring up "Couldn't get IP-address for you host name." Default PORT was 5900, but I set it to 5902 in AmiVNC4 on the SAM.

I understand that one can use RDesktop on an Amiga to run programs on a PC. Shouldn't it be even easier to invent a way to run programs on another Amiga?

I need to keep my Amiga460ex because PageStream 5.0.5.8 Professional won't run on my X1000 (so far, anyway), and I need it frequently. It sure would be nice if I could run it from the X1000, instead of switching computers all the time.

I've been happily running 5.0.5.8 Pro for a couple of years on my SAM460ex. It was a bit more problematical on my now expired A1. (I don't know what 5.0.5.8a that someone else reports success with is.)

That is not to say it works completely. The python scripts don't work at all for me. Colors are a bit of a mess -- I have to set them up for each completely new document, although if I can reuse a previous document, they're fine.

The earlier versions of PageStream I used didn't import and export graphics files perfectly; a big plus with 5.0.5.8.

The catastrophic (so far) downside is, I can't get it to work on my X1000 at all!

I guess I wasn't so much thinking of it as "a software" but as some sort of separate system, full of its own software. It goes in a folder this time. Thanks.

AmiCygnix contains quite a few file links. If the links are not reproduced correctly then your AmiCygnix may not work the same or may not update properly in the future. I would reinstall it on your X1000.
Sounds like very good advice and I will take it. I'll probably try Chris' suggestion to copy my "AmiCygnix/Home/root" folder across, and see whether it works.

AmiCygnix on X1000

I am delighted to see that AmiCygnix runs on the X1000. (I didn't think to check that before I bought it.)

Two questions: To install it, would it be better to copy from my SAM460 or to download the lha and start over? (I assume I still might want to copy some configuration files to save time.)

Should it have its own partition, or is a simple directory good enough? For some reason, I gave it a partition on the SAM, but when I google "AmiCygnix" I noticed only directory installations.
