Re: trying to resurrect a hardrive after IDE interface failure

Now stuck with:
Error "ramlib/80000006" when starting loadwb.
Looking it up on the web brought some mentioning that it could be related to the fact that I am using files from backup. Did anyone encounter a similar situation?

Thanks.

@xenic

I do have a backup, the intention was to resurrect the drive which is apparently readable (at least by dd).

At the moment I transferred the backup of system partition to a card flash : formatted the flash on the amiga side and made it bootable, transferred to a Linux box with a built-in CF reader, dd-ed it to a file, moved it to mac, restored files onto it with UAE , moved the file back to Linux dd-ed onto the CF. Now I have trouble loading workbench (initially I had a pixel64 card which I removed at the moment, trying to work with aga screenmodes and dcandoubler/flickerfixer, moved the pixel64 monitor file to Storage/monitors, trying to sort out the startup-sequence).

Coming up after a long while:

DD-ing the hd and looking with hex editor at it shows RDRK in the header (5244524B, then follow: 81800000 08FFFFFF)
then appears some data with readable ascii string, such as WDB followed by 80, then some readable partition table data. Looking up RDB header found RDSK, not RDRK. Is it valid header?

Gone to dig amiga forever I Have somewhere and try to look at the image with hdtoolbox.

CF2IDE+ adapter jumper settings
Quite a regular
Quite a regular

Hi,

Got this CF2IDE+ angle adapter for A1200

edit (ebay item is not there anymore):

this link works atm

cannot find the full jumper settings.
The intention is to connect CF, 3.5" HD and CDROM, boot device: CF. is it possible?

If not:
CF, 3.5" HD and CDROM.

How should the IDE devices set? (master/slave)
So far tried CF + CDROM, and to boot using rescue floppy and OS3.9 CD. Didn't manage to figure which atapi.device unit to use to mount the CDROM.

With CDROM and HD connected and CF2IDE card pass through jumper on and master jumper off I can mount the CDROM (atapi.device unit 1, set as slave).

Edit:
More info: replaced the IDE port on the motherboard.
Looks like I managed to find thecorrect jumpers' settings. All jumpers are present. If I boot without the CF, CDROM is set as slave: it is bootable using the emergency floppy (atapi device unit 3). When CF is present, cannot boot. Booting without startup-sequence, running "setpatch skipromupdate scsi.device" (as in startup-sequence on the emergency floppy), then mounting the cdrom fails (atapi.device unit 0,1,2 are not present, 3 hangs indefinitely).
CF is accessible, I even managed to set it up with hdtoolbox and format it using a WB3.1 disk. it is bootable and contains the files from the emergency floppy.

Will appreciate any help on the issue.

Thanks
Jack.

First thing I would do is to create an (dd) image of the entire HD.

Thanks for the advice, will dd the file in Linux, actually 1-st thing I did is to run smartctl test on the HD in Linux, didn't check what disk size the Linux recognizes it with.

Hi folks,

Some sad story:
I have an Amiga1200 with Eyetech's buffered EIDE1200 (if I remember correctly the interface name) a thunderstorm came, fried the EIDE board. Now trying to bring the HD (WD800JB) back to life using CF2IDE adapter, bad luck so far. Managed to boot into OS3.9 CD, so the IDE port is OK it recognizes the HD, size is wrong: 7.8 GB instead of 80, no RDB, reported by HDToolBox from OS3.9 emergency boot. When I select the HD it warns about destroying all data (probably wants to initialize it, didn't go further). Setpatch I have on the emergency floppy (worked at it's age!) is 44.2, idefix: 114.19, loadide 3.2. Anything else I can try to improve the situation except from initializing the HD?

Huge thanks...

Hi all

Just noticed when scrolling large of text in a large KCON: or CON: window and some sound-playing application is producing sound (Tunenet/MPlayer) the playback screeches/stutters. To reproduce:

start music playback
open new shell
run "iist >> ram:delme" several times
run "type ram:delme"

in vinced window all is well.

Tried on WB screen with compositing and a public screen without compositing.

Is there explanation and/or remedy for this?

However, I need to rebuild Linux and am having trouble with my CD drive on the Linux box. So I thought I would try to use the DVD/CD drive on my Sam. Hence the search for NFS.

I don't get the scenario. Do you want to transfer the drive to linux, leave it there and access it with Sam? Then you can share it via samba. Or nfs. Is was already mentioned: AmiTCP's nfs client is compatible with Roadshow. Nothing else is needed to be installed.

@tlm

I don't quite get what are you trying to do? If NFS client is needed, then as already mentioned, AmiTCP has one, quite slow. Smbfs is better performance-wise in AOS4 case. And I thin AmiTCP's nfs implemenation is of NFS version 2. I tried both, smbfs and nfs, now I stick to smbfs (works with Linux server, couldn't do it with OSX server which isn't a "must" at all here).

If NFS server is needed, then I don't think there's something decebnt out there. Afaik, AOS4 can be smbfs server.

I didn't encounter the word "serial" in the entire thread. I hope u tried to hook some kind of terminal to the serial port

Edit:
And this one popped int my mind after posting this: inserting the battery upside down into the holder for a minute or two while the power cable is disconnected.

@K-L
It uses greasemonkey. Means the content the browser receives is rewritten on the fly: download links to the actual files are added to it(sort of embedded flayer/youtube-dl/and maybe tubex).
Some plugin api should exist to allow such operation.

If you can get another 4 ports router or switch for free: stick one cable from the original router into on of the lan ports of the new one and you get 3 port on the same subnet of the first router.

Query options will be nice. About adding cover support: a command to change the cover image inside tunenet. MEanwhile will try to communicate with ringhio myself. And: imbedding cover into files can be inefficient, especially when music is collected as whole albums, then single cover image for the whole dir is more suitable.
