Next Gen Amiga OS Hardware Comparison
Not too shy to talk
Not too shy to talk

See User information
Hi guys,

Over the last few months a number of pieces of hardware have been
proposed and/or shown for use with OS4. I have compiled all the
information I could find into a (Work In Progress) Table of
Comparison, which should be attached to this post.

I hope this helps in seeing what is/might be coming soon and how
things stack up with each other. Please let me know if you have
any suggestions, modifications, more information, etc.

Thanks,

PJS

Hello pjs, thank you very much for compiling this wealth of information, it is exactly what I was looking for.

I have searched for this information on the world wide web for some time, but a lot of things that I read on webforums were rather confusing.
I reckon from information that ssolie provided to me that the release of the SAM440-Amiga is planned for the first quarter of 2007. Do you have any information about the plans of the other hardware projects? Thank you again!

Nice one, Paul.

That makes it so much easier to compare than reading several pages of forum posts. Thank you.

[You might just want to correct the spelling of "Troika" in the column heading]

cheers

I'm confused as well.

I was advised that the only board licensed for OS4 by Amiga Inc. is the Eyetech AmigaOne (which I believe, sadly, is no longer manufactured).

Shouldnt we wait for an official announcement by Amiga Inc. before we discuss these issues?

Isn't it rather disrespectful to Amiga Inc to be discussing, what are probably, company confidential matters.

The hardware details have been announced by the manufacturers themselves (both on websites and in IRC discussions), and are not private. The manufacturers have (probably) released the details in order to get prospective customers interested.

Amiga Inc have said that they have had discussions with some manufacturers about licenses, although they are non-committal about the results. You might be forgiven for thinking that these hardware details have been made public in order to increase the chances of a manufacturer gaining an OS4 license from Amiga Inc.

There were quite a few News items and other announcements on amigaworld.net in September. Here is a list of them. You might find some interesting data in there, but take it all with a pinch of salt, a lot of the announcements are optimistic, to say the least.

Also in September, Bill McEwen of Amiga Inc answered a set of 20 questions posed by people at amiga.org.

@All

The information presented in that table is simply what I boiled down
from all the PUBLIC information I could find. Some of it is even
confirmed with some of the hardware developers.

I have attempted to present no whatsoever claims regarding licensing
- that's for the developers and Amiga Inc to announce. The table
just reflects the announced intent of these developers to run Amiga
OS and (even) to get licenses.

@tonyw

Geez... I'm sorry for the Troika typo... Looks like there's my first
revision for an upcoming v1.4 of the table!

@RomanceClip

No proprietary information is divulged in this table.

Thanks all,

PJS

@Sister Rita

No info on dates.

FWIW, I know better than to ask for hard dates from developers.
I know these guys are all working hard on projects with no money
(and little promise of future mountains of money).

Under real world conditions and those limitations, schedules are
the first thing to slip.

But look at the flip side, even MicroSloth blew their schedules by
what? Two Years? And they had a bajillion times the resources
to plow into a substantially sloppier target.

c'est la vie,

PJS

This is an interesting PDF.

Unfortunately, while it has answered some questions I had about AmigaNG, it has created many more unanswered ones.

First of all (I know the Samamtha is not out yet but some people here have alluded to it being available this month or next) are any of the other boards available?

Are they shipping with OS4 yet?

Are they licensed by Amiga Inc. ?

They all seem to be powerful from my perspective - do we need all this power?

Sorry if I am asking too many questions - I have read all the topics on this site and I havn't found the answers to these questions.

First the product needs to work, then you can get license, no point in getting a license before the motherboard work.

So it's where likely we see motherboards running UBOOT first, I don?t know how hard it is to get Linux working, I guess it depends on the individual hardware manufactures if they like to support it or not.

TSI109 supports PSI-X and DDR memory yet they are not listed in the specifications of the panda board?
