Its not a website- its an application that runs in Workbench: an "app store".

There are categories for a wide range of software, games and media.

Personally I'm hoping to see a lot more shareware on the store, rather than the freeware we normally get.
I know that sounds crazy, but the more people get money (even if only a bit of extra pocket money) the more apps will be written, and that's what we sorely need.

Hi AmigaKit,

I really, really, hate, hate, the term "app store", a lot, lot!

I guess it's because I can remember a time when it used to be called (properly) "computer software" or "computer programs".

To me "app" is something invented by the bozos at apple computer corporation, oh, wait, they don't exist any more, as Kentucky Fried Chicken doesn't either.

Otherwise, I'm ALL 4 IT!!!!

(Well, if there was a corner that, you know, had computer programs for sale.)

I was using "app" as an abbreviation for "software application" long before that term was hijacked to mean "mobile application."

Hi Hans,

Well, what an awful fluke that is.

Hey, I would never ever say that about you.... you're an Amiga legend!!!!

Thank you for being here 4 us!

And the long winded reply;

You see, the ipads/derivatives of the world have reduced "computers" to "applications devices".... It's not "real computing" as we used to do, well, we still are, aren't we?

That's why I came to hate the term.

However, the devices have their uses (I'm still not too fond of them), but they are going to destroy the market for genuine computers, because as sales decline, lowering it to a niche market, it will drive dedicated computer prices up.... Like WE need THAT!

I have used an ipad, and the novelty wore off, very, very quickly because I was locked out of the system, the programs are big, I even crashed it. I ran out of system memory and a program couldn't start, after 7 minutes of use, I kid you not! My friend who owned it was SHOCKED as he had been using it for over 9 months with it NEVER happening to him!

So, I bought this on clearance tablet. It has 1 GB of RAM (for sure) and 4 Gigs of storage I believe.... It's a Proscan 7 inch, with Android 4.1 (close enough), and has a single core 64 bit CPU running just over 1 GHz. IT DOES NOT WORK!!!!! The CPU is WAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYY too slow, as it can't even display characters on the screen as I type them!!!! I can wait as long as 7 seconds for it to show what I typed, and at times it loses some of them. I stop typing because it isn't showing them, so I don't know how much it might buffer, but I've lost letters with as few as 10 typed in by me.

This I find extremely BIZARRE as it does (nearly) full screen video playback from a wireless connection 20 feet away going through a wall!!!! Mind you, it will at times pause or get choppy, trying to get data. That could be due to any number of things, though.

The chrome internet browser will often lock up too, even when I'm just on google typing in search terms!!!

Maybe the expensive 4 core ones are just way more reliable. It is a "no name" brand, and I often find, that those REALLY should be avoided, and had I known that "Proscan" was made by Curtis, I definitely would not have bought it.

CURTIS MANUFACTURES GARBAGE. And they have been around for over 15 years, easy.

Anyway, I haven't yet come to grips with what I can really do with it, as using it as at least a word processor is near impossible.

Oh okay, so will it be available soon and where do we get it? Sounds cool, a bit like 'Apple Store' I use on the Mac (runs and hides lol).

It is being Beta tested now. There are some issues to sort out before launch. Here are some screen shots of it running on my Amiga:

Hey, I would never ever say that about you....

I know. I just decided to give you a slightly different perspective on the abbreviation "app."

I don't think that it will destroy the desktop market. Tablets/phones are nice devices for consuming content, but if you want to create stuff, then you're much better off with a desktop computer. Would you want to write a novel on a tablet or phone? Or, editing a video? Heck, have you ever heard of a developer developing an iPhone/Android app without using a desktop?

I agree 100%. Mobile devices will never replace the good old Desktop-Work.

Yes, you are correct.

I guess that the amount of companies that make desktops and/or their profits will shrink. Well, that segment of their production, at least.
