What we need now desperately is proper network support distributed as standard - none of this Samba lark which is no longer supported elsewhere.

You've got it wrong. The SMB/CIFS protocol that samba implements is still widely in use. It is just that most OSes have updated to newer versions while our smbfs and samba ports are still based on really ancient versions of this software.

Would this be suitable as an openamiga.org project?

Which are you referring to specifically? Boxfs, fuse-ext2, filesysbox library, updated samba client or maybe all of them?

BTW there are some FUSE samba filesystems that I've been looking at but they all need a more or less up to date smbclient library.

Another filesystem I've been working on is sshfs. Unfortunately this one contains quite a few unix:isms so is not so easy to port despite it's very small source code.

Id get in touch with olsen first as he is, as one of his many projects, trying to update samba...

IIRC he was considering updating his smbfs filesystem to work with newer samba servers a while back, which is another reason why samba filesystems are not very high on my TODO list ATM.

http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/SquashFS-HOWTO/whatis.html

It is a read-only, compressed filesystem in a file. Compression algorithm used can be one of: gzip, lzo, lz4, xz.

Useful for backup archives as well as things like emergency boot CDs where space is tight and disk read speed is terrible.

How about Amiga Network filesystem? Someone said that he has already ported it to OS4. Would be nice to have it as a native just like OS3.9.

I believe someone is working on that. (not me) but in anycase it's not a filesysbox filesystem it's native code. The 68k version works fine here.

A native Envoy 4.0 would be really nice.

Ahh... Fairly useless in the UK then with the pitiful average upload speed most ISP's give, I've never had more than half a megabit, I get around 15mb down and 0.5mb up, totally usless

It might still be useful in combination with FolderSync2, assuming that file dates can be changed from AmigaOS side. You could either:

1. Use the online storage as a backup, and so just tell FolderSync2 to backup any local changes to it. You leave it running until it has finished backing-up any changes.

2. Use the online storage as the primary (or shared) storage location between multiple computers, and get FolderSync2 to synchronise any changes to/from a local AmigaOS folder. This is what FolderSync2 was really designed for, and means that you can make changes on both sides (online storage & AmigaOS) and have changes from both sides replicated to the other side. You leave it running until it has finished syncing any changes. You would access files locally (on AmigaOS), without having to worry about slow network speeds - just syncing changes whenever you needed to share them.

AFAIK not possible because the source code for it is not available.

I just spent some time porting squashfs-tools 3.0 to AmigaOS only to find out that squashfuse only supports version 4.0 squashfs files but at least the tools are working.

The reason I chose version 3.0 to start with was that later versions use multithreading and signals which make them harder to port.
