Re: NetSurf development builds
Quite a regular
Quite a regular

See User information
I tried several dev builds. They all croaked with DSI error.

netsurf -v showed that it was hanging on URW Palladio fonts.

Launched ok after I got rid of the URW Palladio fonts ...

I have restored my fonts to normal and will use NetSurf 2.9 for now.

---

Update
For some reason, the dev builds don't like URW Palladio fonts..
Launched ok after I got rid of the URW Palladio fonts ....
but launched fine after all fonts were restored to normal.
Perhaps it finished scanning the fonts files after I got rid of the URW Palladio fonts ....
but I am not sure if it even scans the fonts files now after everything is back to normal.

It also crashes here with the URW Palladio fonts, but when I took them out and ran FixFonts it still crashes. I'll try removing all the fonts...

Update

After taking out all the .otag fonts it started to run but gave about 100 errors over the missing DejaVu fonts which also caused errors when rebooting. So I put back just the DejaVu fonts and am posting now from the nightly build.

But should AmiUpdate be able to keep the stable release up to date?
(I think for some reason mine does not seem to get updated automagically)
Any known issues with AmiUpdate + Netsurf?

It won't scan them again unelss you delete the cache file (FontGlyphCache) or change the fallback font through the GUI (there are some extra non-GUI options too, where you can specify a list of fonts to use and stop NetSurf scanning anything else, which might be an alternative workaround here).

Now we've tracked it down to URW Palladio, I will try that here (I assume I don't have it installed but not at home currently to check). If I can reproduce the crash it makes it much easier to fix

Yes, but only to other stable releases (latest is v2.9). Some enterprising person could write something to download the latest dev build and auto-install it using TestAutoInstall (from AmiUpdate) or some similar mechanism, but the dev builds will never be auto-updated through AmiUpdate.

ChrisH reported that v2.8 => v2.9 wasn't updating properly, but so far has failed to supply the Installer log file so I didn't get very far in figuring that one out. Nobody else has mentioned it (until now!)

Just re-checked. I have 2.8 installed.
AmiUpdate always tries to update netsurf, same today.
It loads files ok, install "looks like" it progress ok.
No errors. Update complete.

But I still have 2.8 installed.

None of the files in internet/netsurf have changed.
Amiupdate sees that netsurf still needs updating, easy to redo...
I saw that extracted folder was present in RAM but got deleted... perhaps just the netsurf install script is broken...
Adding more debug log ...
And told au to leave the downloaded archive in ram...

autoinstall command:
; AmiUpdate AutoInstall for NetSurf
cd NetSurf
Installer Install APPNAME NetSurfAutoInstall DEFUSER NOVICE

NS_install.tmp:
1 ;BEGIN NetSurf
2 ClientName="NETSURF" ClientPath="APPDIR:NETSURF" CMDFORMAT="URL=*"http://www.%s*""
3 ;END NetSurf

Then I manually extracted netsurf. And tried it's installer in intermediate mode... it worked (did not have to change any parameters). (had no time to test further)

Perhaps the problem is with novice/automated install mode

@KimmoK

If you add LOGFILE RAM:NSINSTALL.LOG to the end of the "Installer" line in AutoInstall, then in the Shell:
cd to whereever AutoInstall is
execute AutoInstall

It will run through as it does normally, but create an Installer logfile as RAM:NSINSTALL.LOG. Paste that in here, or send it to me, and I'll hopefully be able to fix it.

You'll probably need to roll back to v2.8 first though!

I got the same font crash, but with FNT_BS.TTF (Cinnamon archive http://desler.be/modules/wfdownloads/visit.php?cid=4&lid=30).
You can test it if it crashes with such font.

Or I can send you such TTF font and .otag .font files if you want.

My font files came from the AmigaOS 4.1 Update 1 ISO image.

During my experiments, I created a new font drawer by copying from my AmigaOS 4.1 Update 1 CD-R and NetSurf dev still crashed. After that I removed the URW Palladio files and NetSurf dev launched ok. After I restored my fonts to normal, NetSurf dev launched ok.

That font works fine here. If you can send me your .font and .otag that would be useful, as it might be something in those causing the problem.

Also, do you have font caching enabled in Font prefs?

I've fixed the AmiUpdate/AutoInstall problem (but this will only be apparent once 3.0 is released).

No update on the font scan crash, as I still can't reproduce it here.

When running Snoopy the only "error" I find is a missing font "DeJavu Serif Italic.font" .. Whats the easiest way to find out which font is crashing?

Edit: I've tried to remove different URW fonts (from the ones mention in this thread to all of them). Netsurf still crashes.

Run it with:

The last font mentioned or the font alphabetically after the last one mentioned is the one causing it to crash.
