Python
Just popping in
Just popping in

See User information
Hi

Is there any reason we don't have python version 2.7.x available for AmigaOS4 yet?
Are there any obstacles preventing to compile it?
Is someone working on it already?
We have python 2.5.1 compiled and available so I wonder why we don't have newer version yet
I'm also unable to find source code for 2.5.1 amigaos version though

Thanks

I do not know. But python --version gives 2.5.6.
2.7 would make pygame 2 be in reach (which can use sdl2).

I'd say the only reason is that few people actually use Python on OS4, so there's little motivation to keep up with updates.

and don't you know if the source files are available somewhere by any chance?
I'm interested in differences related to AmigaOS from original source code
I was able to compile 2.7.15 python binary, but there are some errors still so I wanted to check what differences were done

I would propose to talk with Andy Broad. He uses python a lot with his sketchblock app and if I recall right, he was involved on the last update of python at the OS4.

Yes, Andy Broad (broadblues) would be your go-to source as regards Amiga Python. He's about the only person I know that uses Python on OS4

I may start using Python on the Amiga, although the lack of Python 3.x might be a stumbling block...

I'm not surprised, I would also find it useful :)

I'd rather have Numpy and of course the revision to go with that, than Python 3. I would not need it for my own beginner stuff, but to run existing software.

I compiled something that might actually be Numeric (this is meant for Python 2.5), but I can't get it to be recognized!

Funnily enough. I only did a Google search to see if anyone had ported Python3 to AmigaOS4 yet. I have been using it for work a bit of late and thought it would be cool to play with it on the Amiga.

I use ISO 8859-1 encoding. However, it might be useful to switch to UTF-8, is it supported? The "# coding=utf-8" thing as first line did not work.
