Floppy disk drive on SAM

I want to use a floppy drive on my SAM. What hardware do I need? Can I use external USB? Thanks all.

See User information
Yes, you can use an external USB drive. The only problem I can remember is that you will almost certainly need one with its own external power, as the USB ports in the SAM can't supply enough DC power to run things like CD-ROMs or floppy drives.

It should "just work". You will be able to plug in a PC-formatted floppy (FAT-32) and it will mount automatically. But you will not be able to read old Amiga disks.

Thanks for the advice all!

@Rob

I have a collection of old HD PC formatted disks to sort out. Nothing exciting. ;)

If you can find a Catweasel Mk. IV then you're sorted. :)
Kryoflux is also good but I not sure of AmigaOS drivers, they exist, I believe, but I've never used them.
Getting hold of a Catweasel is very difficult, but worth it :)

So, the Kryoflux would be the number one replacement for a catweazel?

How is the error-handling on bad sectors/blocks?

@Resurrected thread

I've been trying to read my collection of hundreds of Amiga disks (DD 880k, HD 1.76MB, and DiskSpare) on the Kryoflux with a Sony MPF920 and NEC FD1231T. So far, I have not been able to read a single disk out of my whole collection.

I have the USB connected directly to the SAM460 motherboard. The floppy is powered by the PSU. The following is the most recent attempt of getting Amiga disks read.

I had been thinking of the Catweasel, but from what I read, the Kryoflux was supposed to be better at recovering old Amiga disks. What I really would prefer at this point is a real classic Amiga with a 1.76MB floppy drive and KS 3.1 to read and convert to .adf files. It all comes down to what I can afford.

I am not sure if I'm misreading your post, but do you have the Kryoflux hardware?
It looks like the device can not be found.

The Floppy has to be connected to the Kryoflux hardware which then is connected to the Sam via USB.

As I said in the post, I have the Kryoflux connected directly to the motherboard. The green, red, and yellow LEDs light up and flash, showing the board is working and recognized; yet, the yellow light often goes out while trying to access the drive. After hitting the reset button on the board, the USB stack sees it again. Even though it sees the board, it can't read a single disk.

Don't get me wrong, the Sam460 has limited number PCI slots, and they might already be in use.
Using USB ports you don't run into lack of PCI port issue.

Internal USB header? Does USB sticks work directly on the motherboard? Maybe the pin out are wrong.

Just need the 0V, +D, -D and +V5 in correct order, google it find some pictures on how to connect it. read the Sam460 manual.

I connected the Kryoflux board via a USB motherboard to USB B cable. I've already checked the wiring against the SAM460ex manual to make sure it was correct. I have also tried switching between the USB 1.0 and 2.0 motherboard headers.

I have also checked the floppy cable, making sure the red line was connected to pin 0. The floppy drive is at the end of the cable just past the twist in the ribbon.

Which USB port did you use?
J28 is only USB 1.0 and Kryoflux needs 2.0.

Another problem could be the onboard usb hub the sam460 has - the kryoflux should be used without a hub.

ask acube which usb ports are not connect to hub.

I've tried two different motherboard headers. Perhaps they both were hubs? I'll check with ACube.

Edit: I checked last night. The headers I tried were J12 and J13. I have not tried J28; however, J28 is the USB 1.0 header. I still have no word from ACube.
