I just wanted to say thank you to everybody that contributed to the OpenAmiga projects so far.

I now have a large queue of incoming code to go through and figure out how to integrate it into the main OS. What a great problem to have.

Filer was the first project we received code for and it has mostly been sitting idle. I did fix it up and made sure it compiles with the latest beta includes. Then broadblues fixed a few bugs and I still need to merge his changes back into the trunk and do a beta testing release. We still aren't sure exactly how to integrate it into the rest of the OS in a way that makes sense.

Due to a big pile of the other commitments I haven't been able to go much further yet. It doesn't help when partners like A-EON dump a new hardware platform to support on you. Again, what a great problem to have.

In any case, thanks and keep up the great work!

@Steven
Imho integration of Filer is that area which need to discuss publicly as much as possible. There is users who want only that, and those who do not want it as replacement (i read that in few forums). Probably , there should have been ability to enable/disable filer in workbench's windowses.

Maybe as it done in dopus5 can be way to go: user dbl-click on the directory/partition icon, and by spawning context gui can choice: view as name, icon, icon action, show all.

In our context menu we alrady have "View By", where is icon, name, data, size, type, etc, probably just adding there "action mode", will just make window be "filer" one. Then, when user will snapshot that window, it will remember states.

By that way there will be no big needs to think how to integrate and not piece off some of users who like wb as it now, as it all can be and as old WB, and as new looks, and as they wish.

edit: probably "Show As" is area to put "Action" mode (which will make current window be filler one).

good to see many partecipants on this.

Maybe it's odd to say, but...

"I now have a large queue of incoming code to go through and figure out how to integrate it into the main OS."

i know that all the code in openamiga are mainly c/c++ based, but could the team accepts other languages code(to be ported), as well as ideas, concepts... and so on...

Well I like they way it is, I don't like Filer can you make it a option?

Best if things are plug and play, I think.

That what i say: by one option you enable it, by another disable, like in dopus5. So anyone who want pure wb will use it like this, anyone who want filer , will just choice on wb window "show as->filer mode" and then snapshot if want it be always like this. Or then "show as->wb mode", and so on.

I can't imagine how we can "really integrate" the Filer as is, right now it's a standalone program per se, but for sure i think that most its code can be used and so part of that code can be integrated on the system without loosing any of the current look and fell of the actual Workbench (so anyone will be happy, traditionalist and all ppls in search of new basic features)

Personally i don't think we will need all the features of the latest Filer, instead I will start integrating that:

1 - The back/home/forward buttons and the url search area (and of course the user defined buttons of the prefs)
2 - The status bar code containing all the info related to the files, however this one might be changed/improved at some point because it will be better to put all that info strings into a real statusbar (like the statusbar of NetSurf) rathen then using the current style of the Filer (an additional area that resamble the old OWB of Joerg)

I will also avoid all the other things for now, for example the Drag&Drop or the Thumbnails feature (we have them already in newest version of the OS) but also many specialistic features can be dropped completely for now

Imho the new Workbench should be simple and easy to use, natural and userfriendly for all the people that who were accustomed with the old WB, but also able to give atleast some basic feature to the WB

So no messy and no need of having all the 100 different features of the Filer, imho just 2 or 3 of its functionalities that will be really usefull for all and no more, than of course with the time ..

Another example is PrefsCenter, look at the grab:

http://os4depot.net/filedata/snapshot/6425_4_snap.jpg

Taked as a standalone program it's ok, but how we can integrate such thing into the system ?

Tabs need to be removed for sure, but also the button below, what can be taken can be the good disposition of the icon (and maybe the blue text for the extra info), but at this point such type of disposition should be availible in all part of the system with a proper option in workbench menu, not only in prefs window

As is it's not standard at all

If you want an example of a good (and standard) thing see the MorphOS prefs instead: http://jpv.wmhost.com/morphos2_review/pics/04-prefs.png

@All

Ohh come on all now. I'm sure ssolie and the dev team can make whatever decisions they need to make on their own. What they can't do however is to please everyone. As we all know it's not in the nature of the general amigan to agree with any other amigan on what's the best way to do something ;)

Now if people want to give input on the active and suggested projects, then please fire away :) Or even better, find a project that you want to make happen and get hacking!

You might as well link an OS X prefs screen. Its even better

I really like this idea and hope Steven and the team also sees its benefits.

To me, it would probably mean I would actually get to use Filer now and then and slowly get used to changing my ways, just as I have slowly started using text mode windows in some cases on WB. And I wouldn't feel like I would have to "go and start a program" in order to use Filer's capabilities.

(Old dogs can learn new tricks, they just need more time )

Of course, but is there any harm in adding a flow of ideas to pick from to the incoming flow of code? The code may be finished, but the integration still needs to be decided, so a few ideas from future users might be useful. We all know who gets to take the final decisions, and I'm not disputing that.

(I'll admit, though, that it might have been a better idea to use a fresh thread for it ...)

Best regards,

Niels

I'm sure, while the dev team gratefully accept any and all inclusions made via the OpenAmiga project, accepting code written in one language and having to port it to C/C++ would tantamount to writing it from scratch, which simply isn't viable, and really goes against the OpenAmiga project to "help out" the progress of AmigaOS.

As it currently stands, all the parts of AmigaOS are written in C/C++, so accepting entire projects written in Hollywood or "E" simply don't make sense when you consider that someone has to rewrite the entire codebase to a language which all current developers can work with.

That said, there is nothing wrong with releasing those contributions via a third-party website (like OS4Depot) so that everyone can instantly make use of them though. All development is good.
