Jagged Alliance 2 Tester needed
Quite a regular

Hi!

I need someone that can test a port of Jagged Alliance 2 (straciatella). The following prerequisites exist:

- Must have an up-to-date AmigaOS 4.0 installation with the latest updates installed.
- Must not be AmigaOS 4 beta-tester (I want to know whether it runs on a normal system)
- Must have the data files of the game (see below)

Data files:
The game works with Windows and Linux data files. The demo version does seem to have some issues. so you will probably need the full game. The Linux version can be installed without a PC; I don't know about the Windows version, but I'd guess they need a PC since the demo files cannot be extracted either without Windows.

If you want to test it, please write me a mail at

Hans-Joerg AT friedenhq.org

Thanks!

I found this site where you can buy for 9.95$ a full download version.

I have not tested this.. so I don't know if its the rigth version and if it actual works :)

I don't think "Unfinished Business" will work. You will need the original version (the Gold version should do as well).

I am not sure about it though, I only have the original Linux version ported by Tribsoft.

Is this likely to work on a 160mhz BPPC?

Jagged Alliance 2 Gold Pack New ?5.95 plus ?1.95 postage and packaging.

Would be worth it if I could get it running with the above hardware.

To be honest, I don't know. I can try build the demo version binary and send you a copy; that will not really work for playing, but for evaluating the speed, it would be enough.

Personally, I would guess that a BlizzardPPC is sufficient to play the game.

If you mean Baldur's Gate, no the game uses its own engine.

I am looking into possibilities for the installation, but it is looking bleak. The game uses InstallShield 5 CAB files, and those cannot be extracted by any program I know that is open source and portable.

Right now, a PC, or the Linux version (which is tar.gz) are the only options for getting the data files.

LOL... We all know how useless beta testers are ;)

Have you found a tester already?

If not, I guess I could do a quick test of it for you. I have the PC version of the game, and I have it installed on my PC (I haven't played it much though).

Are you 100% sure that the CAB extrator i ported won't work?, i havent tried it yet, well not with JAGGED ALLIANCE anyway but i have used it alot back when i where dooing sdl ports etc.

its on OS4depot incase you want to give it a go, back then there was no other tools that would extract the files i wanted so thats why i ported that small tool.

http://os4depot.net/index.php?functio ... y/filetool/cabextract.lha

and also unsheild:

http://os4depot.net/index.php?functio ... ity/filetool/unshield.lha

will try them asap and look around if the orginal source has been updated to support more versions and so on, i think i should be able to do this in the weekend, if not then it will be on monday.

I'll give this a spin as soon as I can... if those tools work, it would be great, as it would make things a good deal easier (and allow me to add an installer script to JA2 on release :))

If it's just a standard CAB archive you don't need any tools, XAD, and therefore SYS:Utilities/UnArc, can extract CAB archives.

Using the UnZip and UnArj tools for the Descent II installation wouldn't have been required either, XAD/UnArc supports these 2 archive types as well.

InstallShield CAB files and Windows CAB files are two entirely different things, believe it or not!

Is the windows CAB format documented anywhere? I can see this problem coming up again and again, so this might be worth investigating.

There is a Library API info in the quick links for libmspack. Don't know if that is of any help.

And InstallShield links:

Forget the API documentation, it's open-source. So, any developers that know how to write XAD/XFD decompressors up for the task of adapting this?

The author (Stuart Caie) of libmspack has done several XAD-Clients and XFD-Slaves, including the old CAB Client. Maybe we should simply ask for an update?
