Hardware News

Bassano del Grappa (Italy) 10/01/2007 - Alternative Holding Group, Soft 3 and Virtual Works created today ACube Systems Srl, a company born to take care of the production and commercialisation of the Sam440ep product line.

Sam440ep will be the first manufactured motherboard. The heart of Sam is the PowerPC 440, a System On Chip (SoC) made by AMCC under a licence from IBM.

The main characteristic of a SoC system is the presence, together with the CPU, of a number of integrated peripherals which allow to build a complete system with a huge savings of both development and debug time, with less components and space used on the PCB. This also results in a significant cost reduction for the customer.
As a consequence, the board doesn't need the classical northbridge / southbridge combination because a part of their functionalities are implemented in the CPU, and the balance is provided by other components and devices.
The availability is planned for the first quarter of 2007.
The new company will continue to do research and development for current projects for the embedded and desktop markets.
More news will be made available in the next weeks through the company website www.acube-systems.biz

@Sister_Rita

Maybe you can upgrade that creaky old Amiga 500 you have.

unfortunately amiga/os4 is not mentioned and the new homepage is not up yet.
let's still hope the best to get these things resolved.

The other information that I got from this news item, is that they're still on schedule. Remember around October that they stated a desired 1Q 2007 release? well, its 2-3 months later, and after a long period of silence this "estimated availability" date hasnt changed. Thats cause for a mini celebration, given that all other hardware makers (for os4) are experiencing delays.

Amiga Inc paid Hyperion to do a port to an older AMCC chip, the 403EP I think it was. This was the previous generation of the chip that Samantha uses. I wonder if much of that work can be used in the Sam440EP OS4 port? The drivers for the SATA, sound and graphics already exist as I understand it.

 Re: ACube Systems
The fact that they established a new company really shows how committed they are to make this work, good for them.

My understanding is that they need to cut cost on board, removing some layers and stuff not needed for OS4 community, to make this a really selling product.

Should they? This board is mainly aimed at the embedded market and it is nearly perfect for its purpose.
