Browser is a tad slow at times and I can't log onto this site with it, but hey that was an unexpected extra.

The WP is fantastic and has a huge selection of features. If you you are in a position to do so please make a donation to Ed for his great work and dedication to this project.

Ed
Fantastic work as usual. Can I suggest you include some search engine pages under the home button where you provide a series of links.

 Re: AbiWord PORTED TO Amiga OS4!
SZAMAN: The AmigaOS theme for X11 - looks brilliant !!

The more X11 looks like it belongs - the better.

From the look of things, have you reduced it to a screen (without the Linux/Mac desktop). I hope so, for then things will really fit together.

Another thankyou

Have fun with these programs!

If you have any problems with it, it would be nice to let me know. Without your help I can't improve it.
I know that the programs are not perfect, but I'm sure that it can be usefull

If AbiWord doesn't start, please try to start it from shell (Type "abiword-2.5" in a shell), so you can
see the error messages. Stack should be min 2000000.
If this doesn't help, please post a snoopy-log.

 Re: AbiWord PORTED TO Amiga OS4!
@cygnusEd

Thanks. I can't wait to give it a try, especially with the Word Perfect import ability, since I use that at work.

But I have a problem right now with it.

When I click the start script icon for AbiWord or osb it opens up Cygnix, and -at least for AbiWord- it gives me a splash screen. But that's it. No visible program.

Stack size: set on the start script icon or on an executable in .bin?

Sorry, it's been a long time since I've done anything with this 'nix stuff.

Here's what I got with a shell startup:

New Shell process 9
9.System:> abiword-2.5

(process:1779623872): Gdk-WARNING **: locale not supported by Xlib

(process:1779623872): Gdk-WARNING **: cannot set locale modifiers
glib printf_parse() format == NULL
No fonts found; this probably means that the fontconfig
library is not correctly configured. You may need to
edit the fonts.conf configuration file. More information
about fontconfig can be found in the fontconfig(3) manual
page and on http://fontconfig.org

 Re: AbiWord PORTED TO Amiga OS4!
@Paul

Thanks for your interrest and your detailed bug report!

It seems, that the font caches are broken. Please try this:

Open a shell and type "fc-cache -v -f" + return

You should see something like this:

fc-cache: "/usr/share/fonts": caching, 0 fonts, 2 dirs
fc-cache: "/usr/share/fonts/truetype": caching, 12 fonts, 0 dirs
fc-cache: "/Cygnix/Home/root/.fonts": caching, 6 fonts, 0 dirs
fc-cache: "/sys/Fonts/_TrueType": caching, 31 fonts, 0 dirs
fc-cache: succeeded

The number of fonts may differ.
Afterwards please try to launch AbiWord. Please tell me, if this works for you!

Hope you find it usefull

No problem, which pages you like to include?

BTW: You can find the HTML file for the home button here:

 Re: AbiWord PORTED TO Amiga OS4!
@cygnusEd

here's what I get trying to fix the font cache:

9.System:> fc-cache -v -f
fc-cache: "/usr/share/fonts": caching, 0 fonts, 1 dirs
fc-cache: "/usr/share/fonts/truetype": caching, 0 fonts, 0 dirs
fc-cache: "A1/.fonts": skipping, no such directory
fc-cache: succeeded

I get the same behavior at this point. Partial splash screen and that's it.

Like you said in the readme, it's good to know something about how 'nix file structures work.

So how can I add System:fonts as a path for Cygnix?

WOW. I'm impressed One of the best things to happen for a long time.

@Elwood:

Ideally, there would be a rootless X server, like on MacOS... if the X server opens top level windows directly as intuition windows on workbench or a custom screen, and GTK uses an AmigaOS-lookalike toolkit, it would be almost like a native GUI...

Yeah rootless would be very nice.

Anyone who wants to set up a bounty for it? If there's any developers interested in helping out to make that happen that is. IIRC Edgar didn't know how to add rootless support so it might require some help.

 Re: AbiWord PORTED TO Amiga OS4!
@Paul

Ah o.k., now I'm sure, where the problem is.

The first problem is, that GTK2 can't find the user home directory. This can have two reasons:

1. The content HOME environment variable is wrong. Should be "/Cygnix/Home/root"

2 There is a user called "root" in the internet settings. Look at the file "Sys:Devs/Internet/users".
The user "root" should be defined in this way:

NAME=root UID=0 GID=0 DIR=/Cygnix/Home/root

Or delete the "DIR=..." part

If you don't want to change this, then copy your ttf fonts from "Sys:fonts/_TrueType" to "Cygnix:CygnixPPC/share/fonts/truetype". Afterward call "fc-cache -v -f" again. Then it should work!

 Re: AbiWord PORTED TO Amiga OS4!
@Rogue

Thank you for your appreciation! Makes me proud that you like it

@all
I understand, that everyone likes to have a rootless X server.
The first step has to be to create a new display driver, which can open a server window on the workbench. This should not be tooo difficult, but I'm not working at it at the moment. First I like to publish some apps. Several apps are nearly done.
The next step could be a feature, that opens a new server window for every application / window. This is the difficult part. The server code was never assigned to do this and it would be a huge amount of work.

The part with the OS4 lookalike GTK is easy to solve. A OS4 like theme is already included. It could be improved to be more perfect.

In my opinion it would be better, when I try to increase the server performance and fix some other problems first before I start working on a rootless server. What is your opinion?

This last solution worked. The font requestor doesn't seem to show everything it should, but at least the program is running now. I'll fiddle with things some more when I have more time.

Please set the protection bits of the direcories "Cygnix:Home/root/.e16/themes" and "Cygnix:Home/root/.e16/cached" to RWED with you file browser. Then it should work.

This is a problem, that sometimes occurs, but I don't know why. The X11 archive is o.k.

Thank you very much for all of your hard work. But, most of all thank you for the smooth installation. I was able to download the 3 archives from OS4Depot and get this installed and up an running without any trouble at all. I do not even fully understand what it is you have done. I do not know what this software (X11) is doing. I just followed your instructions and I was glad to see the Word Processor screen appear. It works, and even I can do it! You are a hero!

I have! But I also tried the browser now, and for an alpha, it works pretty good.

I went to about 5 different sites, with multiple sub-selections at most of them. I did finally get a "lock up" (well, a really, really, really slow, slow- down) with a whole slew of browser windows open. But considering it's not even ready for online browsing yet, I'd say it does a great job of it.

But I just got a win32 error with XP and Firefox doing this from work, and I've been on line a shorter time than I was with osb browser last night. (hmmm, maybe it's some kind of message that I shouldn't be doing this from work!)

Thanks!

Paul
